Pre-operation:
colon should be prepared a day before surgery, there are two types of preparation:
1- Mechanical preparation:
by taking 4 laxative sachets (KLEAN-PREP) to clean colon lumen
each sachet is dissolved in a liter of water four liters must be drunk within four hours then patient stays on a clear liquid diet
2- medical preparation:
Immediately after completing the mechanical preparation.
the patient should take antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection with colon bacteria post-surgery.
antibiotics are:
neomycin 1 g
and Flagyl 400 mg
this dose is repeated after 6 hours.
In surgeries on sigmoid and rectum, an enema at the night of surgery is mandatory.
Post-operation:
wound care
drains care (if applicable)
colostomy care (if applicable)
diet: fasting time after surgery varies according to patient’s medical situation and physical examination and according to type of surgery.
usually, doctor’s instructions must be followed strictly,
as the gradual diet is liquid – soft – regular, leading to the patient’s final diet.
patient should eat small meals 5-6 times a day instead of the three main meals to avoid colon straining which recently underwent surgery.
